Solar panels and storage systems are clever, here’s how they work...
With advancements in modern technology, solar systems are a fantastic way to save money and generate your own energy.
- Solar panels: Each panel is made up of silicon cells, also known as photovoltaic cells. Sunlight (free energy) is absorbed to create a direct current (DC) electricity.
- Battery storage: The battery (or batteries) store the excess electricity, which can then be used when solar panels are not generating energy, for example, at night.
- Solar inverter: The job of a solar inverter is to convert direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity, ready to be used in your home.
- Your home: Enjoy the many benefits of producing your own electricity, including savings on bills, being energy independent, and not having to rely on the National Grid.
- National Grid: Any excess energy you generate can be sold back to the National Grid, so not only can you save money, you can actually make money from solar.

Systems will vary depending on usage levels – there may be more panels or batteries to provide active service or redundancy. All these options and considerations will be covered in our sales call, so the optimal system for you is selected.

Still Generating In Winter Did you know?Solar panels continue to work well even in winter and on cloudy days.
All Weather, All Year – Don’t be put off by the weather. Even with heavy cloud cover solar panels still produce up to 33% of their normal output.
Many people think solar panels only work when it’s sunny, and as the UK weather is very changeable, solar panels are not worth the investment. While solar panels do generally produce less energy in winter due to shorter days and fewer hours of sunlight, they can still be very worthwhile. Under light cloud cover, solar panels only produce 24% less electricity than on sunny days. If there is very heavy cloud cover they will produce 67% less, according to an International Journal of Engineering Science and Computing study*.
Modern solar panels can still work well in winter or on cloudy days, even though the light isn’t as strong. If you think about it, this actually makes sense, as the sun doesn’t suddenly stop working because of a bit of cloud. Surprisingly, rain can also help by washing away any dust or dirt that might block the light. So if you are thinking of investing in solar to reduce your energy costs and produce your own green energy, don’t be put off by the weather. At GEM, we can give you expert, transparent advice and guide you through the whole process. Tailoring renewable energy solutions to suit your exact requirements and needs.
